Stamford Hill resident Ali Kakande began by cooking a curry chicken as a favour for a stranger in need at the beginning of lockdown and then quite quickly found herself turning out weekly hot meals for isolated elders in the local Caribbean community, many of whom were shielding. Now Ali and her team prepare over 70 meals a week and there are 70 more on her waiting list. But it's not just the food she offers as Carib Eats, it's also the human contact. Her delivery team stop and catch up on the doorstep, where possible, and she follows up with a weekly phone call. This is how she is able to identify those in immediate need, getting additional help if necessary.
As part of Clapton Commons Spacehive campaign, we are looking to support All to develop both sides of the work. With a new commercial oven in the crypt kitchen she will be able to make more meals and, as lockdown eases, she will be able to bring her elders together in the new canteen space. Working also with some of the guests at the Foodbank, already accommodated in St Thomas Church, she plans to host an Urban Table where neighbours can share a chicken curry as well as some human solidarity.
